Gwinnett County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners. This board has both legislative and executive authority, so long that their legislation does not conflict with state of federal law or Constitutions.

The Board has one full-time member, the Chairman of the Board, and four Commissioners serving part-time. The Gwinnett Chairman of the Board is elected by the entire county, whereas the other Commissioners are elected from single-member districts. The Board is in charge of electing a County Administrator who oversees Gwinnett’s eleven executive departments.
